Punjab to Revert Historic Names of Lahore’s Iconic Roads and Landmarks
Lahore is set to reclaim parts of its rich heritage as the Punjab government has decided to restore the original names of several historic roads and localities. The announcement came during a meeting on the Lahore Heritage Areas Revival (LAHR) project, jointly chaired by PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
The meeting focused on bringing back the old names of key roads that were changed over time, including Queen’s Road, Jail Road, Lawrence Road, and Empress Road. These names, once reflecting a colonial past, will now return to honour the city’s layered history.
Along with name restoration, several practical heritage initiatives were approved. A new Tourist Information Office will be established at Akbari Gate to better welcome visitors. Restoration work will begin on important landmarks such as Mochi Gate, Yaki Gate, and Masti Gate. The outer walls of Lahore Fort will also be revived in phases, with special emphasis on maintaining architectural authenticity.
Other exciting plans include the development of a Convent Garden behind Tollinton Market. This project will feature landscaped gardens, retail outlets, a two-storey underground parking facility, and to promote healthy living a new cafe with the name “Everything Organic Café.” The route from Shahalam Gate to Rang Mahal Chowk will be converted into a pedestrian-only walkway, making the area more walker-friendly.
Eight historic routes inside the Walled City, particularly around Bhati, Mochi, Akbari, Yaki, Masti, and Delhi Gates, will undergo restoration. The government also approved the expansion of Data Darbar by acquiring 18 kanals of land, with clear instructions to compensate affected residents at prevailing market rates.
These steps show a balanced approach — preserving Lahore’s soul while making the city more livable and tourist-friendly.
